"Me vs. Them" 19.8 in x 24 in
In this photograph, which I took at the Old Millfun in 1933 in Shanghai, a renowned Gothic-Deco/Brutalist abandoned former slaughterhouse, I capture an old Art Deco circular window framed within another frame. This composition serves as a window into a forgotten world's remnants. It represents to me isolation and disconnection that resonates deeply with my life journey through spina bifida—communicating a ”they vs. me” feeling, highlighting my experiences of feeling like an outsider. My normal being seen as "derelict" by others due to my physical condition, and through this image, I reflect on feelings of exclusion and the desire for belonging, but I am separated.
